A tribute to my grandfather...
On a personal note, my grandfather passed away this week. I loved him a lot. I dug up this article about his famous little hamburger stand - Takoma Burger, which he owned for many years until he (quite stubbornly) gave it up due to health problems. This article is from the Wichita Eagle Beacon archives. (My grandpa was... is.. and always will be "Arky")
Takhoma Burger--60 years of history
By Jerry Winkelman
What attracted you to Arky’s Takhoma Burger, then at 706 W. Maple?
Was it Arky’s sizzling hamburgers, onions and slice of cheese prepared
on that ancient hot iron grill? Or was it Arky’s continuous patter
about Wichita politics, Delano neighborhood history or baseball
statistics from nearby Lawrence- Dumont Stadium?
One of Arky’s customers was the illustrious Ray “Hap” Dumont,
father and promoter of Wichita’s National Baseball
Congress. Dumont often walked over from his office on Sycamore in front of
what was then Lawrence stadium. Takhoma Burger did have
competition from other nearby hamburger “palaces” as well
as L-D stadium’s food vendors during baseball season. You might
remember the old “walk-up” Dairy Queen at the southeast corner
of Maple and Sycamore, later torn down to build the Ice Sports
facility.
Above the entryway, the picuresque neon sign showing a
young waitress in her blue starched uniform still silently presides over
West Maple. Earl McGaugh, known to Wichitans for generations simply
as “Arky,” arrived in Wichita, then a post World War II boom town,
as a young man from Arkansas. He purchased Takhoma Burger
in 1951, although he says it was started a few years earlier in 1948.
The well-worn sidewalk slab at the front door seems to show a date in
the 1910’s or 20’s. Arky says he didn’t “invent the hamburger” because the then
famous White Castle 5-cent hamburger stores were started
in Wichita in 1921. But Arky did start in the 1950’s before the
proliferation of the fast food giants McDonalds, Burger King, Hardees
and many others. Arky remembers doing a tremendous business in those early
days. He recalls his customers lining up around the block or walking over from Lawrence
Stadium. Arky remembers a kind of record, selling 97 dozen hamburgers in one day. Arky also
recalls with pride an order for 100 hamburgers and 75 cheeseburgers
to be flown to Hawaii. Arky admits he doesn’t recall young Vera Ralston, whose family
lived in the neighborhood and whose cousin ran a small grocery store
next door. Arky does remember Vera’s mother and grandmother
often visiting his cafe.
In the summer of 1948 before Arky’s arrival, Ralston graduated
from North High School. That summer, Vera was named princess
of the National Baseball Congress, won the 1948 Miss Kansas contest
and was named a runner-up in the 1948 Miss America contest.
Shortly thereafter, Vera took a train to Hollywood to become
Vera Miles, movie actress, starring in many movies and TV shows.
Some say Vera never returned to Wichita.
I remember visiting Tak-HomaBurger with my father in the
early 1950’s when we drove to Wichita from Pratt. In those days,
west Maple Street was also US-54, carrying lots of automobiles
from Chicago through Wichita to California. Arky did it the old fashioned way
here in Wichita... he ran Takhoma Burger virtually himself for some
50 years.

Make money with your camera - a fun independent contractor job
There's a growing need for contract workers to go to places and take photos of places for "cirtual tours" for busy realtors. I came across this job ad today and although it's by no means a full-time income, a virtual assistant or other freelance professional might make some spare money by being on hand.
Here's another company that hires people to take photographs for virtual tours.
Outsourcing (offshoring) as a political issue...
Apparently the Democratic candidates know that outsourcing jobs overseas is a hot topic in middle America. India has taken notice of Hillary Clinton's newfound vocal opposition to offshore outsourcing, although I couldn't find any American press coverage. I will assume that India is paying attention because it will, of course, affect their economy as well.
Here's what was said in recent rallies:
Barack Obama: "We've got to stop giving tax breaks to companies that are shipping jobs overseas and invest those tax breaks in companies that are investing here in the

Convergys is Closing Call Centers in Canada
The recent changes in the economy, specifically the US to Canadian dollar, are hitting Canadian call centers pretty hard. Convergys, a company that has standard brick and mortar call centers in Canada, and across the world, is now considering closing several of its Canadian call centers. It could be the first in a line of call center closings in Canada, as US companies can't afford to spend the money with the plummet of the US dollar.
Convergys also employs home-based agents in the US and other locations, but it remains unknown if they plan on replacing some of the Canadian jobs with virtual call centers.
